### Detective Puzzle

Detective Puzzle - 19 july

There are five people. One of them shot and killed one of the other five. Which man is the murderer?

1. Dan ran in the NY City marathon yesterday with one of the innocent men.
2. Mike considered being a farmer before he moved to the city.
3. Jeff is a topnotch computer consultant and wants to install Ben's new computer next week.
4. The murderer had his leg amputated last month.
5. Ben met Jack for the first time six months ago.
6. Jack has been in seclusion since the crime.
7. Dan used to drink heavily.
8. Ben and Jeff built their last computers together.
9. The murderer is Jack's brother. They grew up together in Seattle.

Consider yourself to be a detective....So who is the killer ??

1. Jeff is the killer.
1.Murderer had his leg amputated so it can't be Dan.
2.Jack has been in seclusion so it means he wasn't the one who died.
3.Murderer is Jack's Bro so it can't be ben/jack as he met him 6 months ago for the first time.
4.Jack and the murdered grew up in Seattle so Mike can't be the murderer because he was a farmer.
5.One has to be the killer, the left one is Jeff.

1. Illogical , why will Jeff who is richer than Mike and has no relation with him be a murderer of Mike?

2. why can't ben be the murderer because her and jack met 3 months ago? Because he had no reason to kill him?

S/P

3. oh.... Ben can't be Jack's brother.

I was down the line between Ben and Jeff. But if Ben can't be the murderer, then it has to be Jeff.

Good puzzle!!

2. oops sorry...it's jeff

3. @Doom : : : U r absolutely right man...Yes the murderer s jeff...

4. Mike "considered" being a farmer - it doesnt say he actually was. The discrepency between point 3 and 8 did it for me.

1. Someone finally pointed that out! Jeff intends to install ben's new computer but "built" (which is past tense) their last computer in #8 which could mean he wouldn't be able to install ben's new computer... does that makes sense?

5. It's Jeff...

1. Dan is innocent cause he ran in the marathon contradicting to the fact that the murderer is amputated.
2. Ben must be innocent since they had just met 6 months ago, discrepancy with the statement no. 9.

that would leave mike and Jeff...

3. It was said that the murderer is from Seattle behind the fact that Mike lives in countryside with his statement that "I considered being a farmer before moving to the city."

That would lead us to Jeff..

4. Statement 3 and 8 are of contradiction, well it's because Ben has a new computer and statement 3 says that Ben and Jeff built their computers together..

So that leaves Jeff to be the most suspicious one...

6. ---> Jeff
Because
-Dan ran in marathon and murderer has his leg amputated.
-Mike was farmer before so he can't grew up with Ben in Seattle.
-Ben met Jack for the first time six months ago so can't be his brother.
-Murderer is Jack's brother so he can't be the murderer.

7. sorry
*grew up with Jack

8. Maybe Dan lost his leg to Diabetes exacerbated by his heavy drinking and used those Cheetah Blades or some other prosthetic to run the marathon. Also, it is entirely possible for Ben and Jack to be brothers and yet only having met for the first time six months ago.

Also, if there are five people, how can one of them kill one of the other five, shouldn't that read one of the other four?

1. yeahh we killed together +__+

9. me and @Seidon we killed him after he stole 50cent from me +__+

It's Jeff..

11. a background story would have helped or made it more realistic this is more like an equation :/

12. jeff is the murderer because he's a HUGE fag

13. Jeff is totally the murderer

14. The one issue I have with this riddle is how would you know the murderer lost a leg to begin with? If you knew the murderer lost a leg, you'd know who the murderer is from the start.

15. who was killed?

16. Because Mike "considered" being a farmer before he moved to the city does not literaly mean, that he couldn't be Jack's brother.. You can only suppose that he is not from Seatle because of his farming interest.. but according to clear facts I think that the solution of this puzzle stops with two suspect - Jeff and Mike and after this it is just mere speculation.. Or the solutions above miss some important coherence between the FACTS or this puzzle is incomplete, bacause according the facts you can't with 100% certainity say who is the murderer (nor the murdered)...

17. I agree. You have to make a lot of assumptions that might not be true, in order to get to Jeff. Amputees run marathons. Brothers might never meet until later in life. Some city folk want to be farmers.

1. I know I'm two years late, sorry... :) But i just had to reply....
You are right. Amputees do run marathons. Brothers may meet very late. Some city folk may want to be farmers. But in accordance to the question :-

I think for major marathons such as the NYC, there is a separate section for the amputees. Since only the murderer had an amputated leg, the innocent men have both their legs. Dan ran with an innocent man , so I assume he had both legs and cant be the murderer.

About the brothers, it is said that Jack and the murderer grew up together in Seattle... so the murderer has met Jack when they were kids atleast.

And finally, Mike said he wanted to to be a farmer BEFORE he moved into the city. Which means he is originally from a village or country or something... the murderer is from Seattle, which is where he grew up. So Mike can be ruled out.

2. WRONG!!! Sorry fidha, but that is not necessarily true!He could have grew up in Seattle, then moved to the country or a village, THEN moved back to the city.
Sorry that this is a year late! (:

18. I easily eliminated everyone but Mike and Jeff. From the tense, it seemed like Jeff was still alive, so Mike must have been the guy who got murdered.

19. can't there be a farm in seatle meaning mike can be the murderer

1. Mike could have grew up in Seattle, then moved to the country, and later decided to move back to the city. The murderer could still be Mike after all.

20. How to Become a Detective helped to give many police officers a satisfying career path. It is a way for police officers who have mastered the duties of enforcing the law to specialize in a specific area and enjoy a long career with lots of room for advancement. Although the hours are long, each case provides plenty of opportunity for a diverse experience.

21. When is it established that Jack is still alive? It said that Jack has been in seclusion since the accident, to which I figured to mean that Jack is dead and secluded... in a coffin. In the ground. I figured that Dan is innocent, because the murderer had his leg amputated last month, in which case it is unlucky that Dan is prepared to run a marathon, whether he had a prosthetic. Ben is also innocent, because if the murderer is Jack's brother, the murderer couldn't have met Jack just 6 months ago, which is the case between Ben and Jack. The murderer also can't be Mike, because it said that Mike had been considering being a farmer BEFORE he moved to the city, meaning he had been living in the country. It says that, since the murderer and Jack are brothers, they grew up together in SEATTLE, a city, meaning that it couldn't be Mike, who lived in the country. This leaves the only other possible perpetrator to be Jeff, who killed his brother, Jack.

What's wrong with my theory?
