**Upsc Puzzle Question - 12 December**

The question that follows came in the UPSC final exam that was held in December 2013. Only one examinee i.e. Gaurav Agarwal was able to solve it. Can you solve it?

? + ? + ? + ? + ? = 30

You have to fill numbers in place of question marks. The numbers that you can use are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15. You can repeat the numbers if you like.

Solved it?? Perhaps you meant to say "proved insolubility" or something like it, cause 5 odd numbers can not give an even sum (30), so the problem has no solution with the given numbers.

Deleteimpossible

ReplyDeleteThe answer is

ReplyDelete(15 - 9) + (13 - 7) + (7 - 1) + (9 - 1) + (13 - 9)

If you calculate it, you will get

6 + 6 + 6 + 8 + 4 = 30

I have seen that answer but i do not know how the answers have brackets and minus in them. IS it because of lack of restrictions based on the explanation or something entirely different?

DeleteIf that was the "correct" answer ,it is absolutely absurd. Why not then simply 1+1+1+...+1=30 (put brackets at leisure to get 5 terms)

ReplyDeleteThis is not mathematics. This is stupidity (on behalf of the ones which thought of such a nonsense for a "problem", I mean)

100% agree with you , and as you can see they are selecting worst bureaucrats.

Delete11₃ + 1 + 5 + 7 + 13 = 30

ReplyDeleteExcellent answer.

DeleteExcellent

Deletenot possible

ReplyDelete9+9+9+9+9 view it upside down to get 6+6+6+6+6= 30

ReplyDeleteI'm with Vinay Sipani. When I saw this problem, my immediate reaction was that it must be in some other base. I think 3+3+3+3+3=30 (in base 5) is an elegant solution

ReplyDelete1+5+11+13=30.

ReplyDeleteThe question should have only 3 boxes.

3!+3!+3!+3!+3!

ReplyDelete1,3+5+5+5,7+13=30

ReplyDelete(7+3) + (7+3) + (7+3) = 30

ReplyDelete7.9+9.1+13=30

ReplyDelete(9+1)+(9+1)+(9+1)=30

ReplyDelete(7-1)+(13-1)+(13-1) =30.......6+12+12=30

ReplyDeleteIs it the correct answer???

15+15+0

DeleteOdd numbers 013579

So it might be twist

9+7-(5-3+1)+(13-11)+15=30

ReplyDelete9+7-(5-3+1)+(13-11)+15=30

ReplyDeleteLast-first 15-1=14,13-3=10,11-5=6. 14+10+6=30

ReplyDeleteThe question is vague and if that is the solution, then it is actually a ridiculously easy question and completely irrelevant

ReplyDelete5+5+11+9

ReplyDelete[5.5] + [1] + [7] + [11] + [5.5]

ReplyDeleteBasically by bringing decimal numbers into picture, you can increase your range of solutions.

Delete""Can you solve it?"" NO (!!!) i cant....

ReplyDeletetum sab log madharchod ho..

ReplyDeleteIt only has 3 slots for numbers..i think its impossible cause even googling it, nothing comes up..don't ya think someone would have posted it by now..pssh

ReplyDelete(3!)plus(9)plus(15)=30 Or (6)plus(9)plus(15)=30 here 6 is not used but we use invert 9 to 6......

ReplyDeleteAll odd digit common number is 2 depend on mathematics furmala. answer is 3+5+7 =30/2 that is answer

ReplyDelete7+7+7+7.5+1.5= 30

ReplyDelete? + ? + ? =30

ReplyDeletex + y + z = 30

x + y + z - 30 = 0

divide them by two

x/2 + y/2 + z/2 - 30/2 = 0

x/2 + y/2 + z/2 - 15 = 0

x/2 + y/2 + z/2 = 15

now insert values from from question (given),

x/2 = 9

y/2 = 3

z/2 = 3

9 + 3 + 3 = 15

Alternatively,

x/2 = 11

y/2 = 3

z/2 = 1

11 + 3 + 1 = 15

Alternatively,

x/2 = 3

y/2 = 7

z/2 = 5

3 + 7 + 5 = 15

Overall, The Solution depends on option given below the question.

ReplyDelete7.5 + 7.5 + 15 = 30,

ReplyDelete9.5 + 9.5 + 11 = 30

11.5 + 11.5 + 7 = 30

Solved: numbers are repeated, various solutions can be derived via the numbering system used.

(15-9)+(13-7)+(11-5)+(9-3)+(7-1)

ReplyDeleteIf u calculate it u will get

6+6+6+6+6=30

my solution for this problem is:

ReplyDelete15 + (11-9)+13=30

15+2+13=30

30=30

right?

You r also right

ReplyDelete11,173 + 13,79 + 5,15 = 30,113

ReplyDeleteBecause they say “Fill the boxes” and the entire exam question was in a box itself! (all given numbers used)

But if you prefer just filling only the little boxes :

11,719 + 13,131 + 5,15 = 30
