#1081 - Read Between The Lines

This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out.

the letter 'e', which is the most common letter in the English language, does not appear once in the long paragraph...

#1087 - Hard Puzzle Age

The average age of 10 members of a committee is the same as it was 4 years ago, because an old member has been replaced by a young member. Find how much younger is the new member ?

Let the sum of nine member (total) =x
and the age of old one=z
so its average 4 yrs before=(x+z)/10.
after 4 yrs let z be replaced by y.
so now avg=(x+4*10+y)/10

now (x+z)/10=(x+40+y)/10
so after solving it found
z=y+40.
so old person is 40yrs older than young one.

#1089 - My Age Puzzle

My grandson is about as many days as my son is weeks, and my grandson is as many months as I am in years. My grandson, my son and I together are 140 years. Can you tell me my age in years?

The first equation (365g = 52s) can be approximated by
7g = s.

As before, the other two equations are
12g = m
g + s + m = 140.

The above system of 3 equations in 3 unknowns (g, s and m) can be simply solved as follows.
g + 7g + 12g = 140 or 20g = 140.
m = 12g = 12 × 140 / 20 = 84.

So, Grandpa is 84 years old.
