I know a 5 digit number having a property that With a 1 after it, it is three times as large as it would be with a one before it.

Guess the number ?

1. The number is 42857. ( 142857*3=428571)
First I took the number as 10000a+1000b+100c+10d+7. The last digit is 7 because we have to get 1 in the unit place after multiplying by 3. Then I formed the equation based on the fact that the number will triple itself with a one after it. After that I got the respective values for the digits....
This is a good question.

2. No the no. 1 only occurs if you have divided the (1) base unit, (/) by it's original form!!
How far back to basics do we have to go????

To get 1 in answer 3 should be multiplied with 7 . so

now we got the right most digit of our initial five digit number. Since the five digits remains the same the second left digit in answer we can write 7

To obtain 7 we need to multiply 3 with 5 and add the remainder 2 in the previous multiplication. so the calculation now becomes

7. 10x + 1 = 3(x + 100000)
10x + 1 = 3x + 300000
7x = 299999
x = 42857

1. Ur method is good n simple. I have used a long method to arrive the result.
