#21 - NYC Hardest Logical Deduction Puzzle

You are hanging around in NYC when a person approaches you.

"Leaving the bald people aside, I can bet a hundred bucks that there are two people living in NYC who have same number of hairs on their heads," he says to you.

You say that you will take the bet. After talking to the man for a couple of minutes, you realize that you have lost the bet.

What did the person say to you that proved his statement ?

This problem can be best solved using the pigeonhole principle.

The argument will go like this:
Assume that all the non-bald people in NYC have different number of hairs on their head. The population is about 9 million and let us assume that there are 8 million among them who are not bald.

Now, those 8 million people need to have different number of hairs. On an average, people have just 100, 000 hairs on their head. If we keep on assuming that there is someone with just one hair, someone with two, someone with three and so on, there will be 7, 900, 00 other people left who will have more than 100, 000 hairs on their head and need different number of hairs.

Now, as per this assumption, if we keep increasing one hair for each person, to make everybody hair different in numbers, we will come across someone with 8, 000, 000 hairs. But that is practically impossible (even 1, 000, 000 is impossible). Thus there must be two people who are having same number of hairs.

#24 - Decode Word Language Puzzle

In a coded language:
a) "Cosey Miso Ro" means "We are Goblins";
b) "Tichu KoPi Miso Pa" means "they are Evil People";
c) "Juha Liho KoPi " means "Who is Evil";
d) "Ro Miso Pi KoPi" means "the Goblins are Evil".

Can you find out what word means "The" in this coded language ?

"The" is defined by the word "Pi".

In the statements (a), (b) and (c), common coded word is "Miso" and common normal word is "are". So, "Miso" means "are".

In the statements (a) and (d), common coded word (except "are") is "Ro" and common normal word is "Goblins". So, "Ro" means "Goblins".

Similarly, in the statements (b), (c) and (d), common coded word is "KoPi" and common normal word is "Evil". So, "KoPi" means "Evil".

Therefore, "Ro", "Miso", "KoPi" means "Goblins", "are", "Evil" respectively. Thus, in statement (d), the remaining word i.e., "Pi" means "the".

#27 - Hard LCD Watch Time Puzzle

The LCD device should be able to tell the right time in the format HH:MM:SS in 12-hour format. You can refer to the picture to get an idea.The device is a simple "level indicator" which has to be converted into a watch. How will you program it to work?

Hard LCD Watch Time Puzzle

The first digit except bottom segment can encode MM (6^2=64>=60).
Some order is needed to be agreed upon so that they represent the MM in binary.
Each element of display is a binary digit:
"On"=1
"Off"=0

In the same manner you can encode seconds by using the second digit.

The rest four elements of display (two bottom segments and two dots) can be used to encode HH (4^2=16>=12)

#28 - Distribution Maths Problem

Three friends decide to distribute the soda cans they had among them. When all of them had drunk four cans each, the total number of cans that remained were equal to the cans each one of them had after they had divided the cans.

Can you calculate the total number of cans before distribution ?

18

Assume that the total number of can before distribution were 3*C

After distribution, each one of them had C cans then.

Each one of them drank four cans and thus (C-4) cans remained.

Now according to the questions we can frame the following equation:

3 * (C-4) = C
(3 * C) - 12 = C
2* C = 12
C = 6

Thus, the total cans before distribution were 3 * C = 3 * 6 = 18.
