IAS Tricky Logical Question

The back seat of the last coach will be the best. The reason is because, the train will be accelerating after the stop and thus, it will be much faster when the back of the train enters the tunnel than when the front of the train enters. Thus you will have to spend less time in the tunnel.

#14 - Cricket Riddle

How many runs at maximum can a batsman score in a normal one day match? Consider the fact that the conditions are ideal and there are no No Balls, no Wide Balls and no Extras in that match.

Cricket Riddle

If we are considering an ideal case and we have to calculate the maximum score, we will assume that the batsman hits six on every ball. But then, at the end of every over, the strike will change. But we have to make sure, he gets to play maximum number of balls to score maximum runs. Thus, the batsman will hit six in first five balls and will choose to take 3 runs in the last ball so that he retains the strike in the following over.

Total runs per over in that case = 6 * 5 + 3 = 33.

But in the last over (50th over), he don’t have to worry about keeping the strike and thus, he will hit six even on the last ball. Therefore, the maximum runs that a batsman can score:

33 * 49 + 6 * 6 = 1617 + 36 = 1653

#16 - Murder Crime Riddle

A dead body is found at the bottom of a multistory building. Seeing the position of the body it is evident that the person jumped off from one of the floor for attempting suicide.

A homicide detective is called to look after the case. He goes to the first floor and walks in the room facing the direction in which the body was found. He opens the window in that direction and flips a coin towards the floor.

The he goes to the second floor and repeats the process. He keeps on doing it till the last floor. Then, when he climbs down, he tells the team that it is a murder not suicide.

How did he come to know that it was a murder?

Murder Crime Riddle

At each floor, he did the same task of opening the window and flipping the coin. If it was a suicide, then at least the window at any of the floor must have been left open by the person who jumped off. The present situation only suggests that someone pushed him off and then closed the window again.

#17 - Philosophical Riddle

Alpha, Beta and Gamma are in a desert. Alpha doesn't like Gamma and hence decides to murder him. He poisons the water supply of Gamma. Since it is the desert area, Gamma must drink or he will die of thirst.

Beta does not know of the actions of Alpha and also decides to murder Gamma. To succeed in his ill motives, he removes the water supply of Gamma so he dies of thirst.

Gamma dies due to thirst. Who murdered Gamma?

Philosophical Riddle

The answer to this question might sound more of a philosophical one.

It is Beta whose action led to Gamma's death directly. It was the scarcity of water that led to his death ultimately. It may be the circumstances prevailing his demise and not a specific person who killed him.

#18 - Maths IQ Puzzle

Indiana Jones has stolen two solid gold bars from a treasure. But now, the village people are behind him. While running away from them, he comes across a bridge formed by a single rope. Now he knows that he can cross the bridge on that rope. But there is a signboard which reads that the rope can carry a maximum weight of 130 pounds only.

Now, the gold bar weighs 20 pounds each and he weighs 100 pounds. How will he cross the bridge now given that he can't leave the gold bar behind and he don't have enough time to return back and take them one by one ?

Maths IQ Puzzle

If you know about the weighing systems, you must be knowing that gold is weighed in Troy system while otherwise normally, the weight is measured using the imperial system.

In Troy system, 12 ounces = 1 pound.
In imperial system, 16 ounces = 1 pound

Thus, 40 pounds of gold weighed in Troy system will be only 30 pounds in the imperial system of weighing. The weight limit for the rope must be in imperial system only as that is the standard weighing system.

Thus the total weight = 100 + 30 = 130 pounds and all he will do is simply walk it carrying both the gold bars.

#20 - Hard Calendar Puzzle

A contest is held on international level in December 2013. The finale of it is between an American and a British kid. Only name and date have to be mentioned on the paper for checking purpose. But when the checkers check it, they find out that both of them have same names. The papers cannot be told apart in any manner now.

What is the date of competition ?

Hard Calendar Puzzle

The date is 12 December 2013. For any other date, the checkers would have been able to identify the papers. Why? Because the British people write dates in Day/Month/Year Format and the American people write date in Month/Day/Year format. On 12 December, the date and month will be the same and thus there is no way to distinguish when the names are same as well.
